European Commission raises concerns over TikTok Lite's "Reward Program" and potential addiction risks

The EU is investigating TikTok Lite's "Reward Program," concerned about its potential to fuel addictive behavior

The European Commission has raised concerns about the "Reward Program" feature on TikTok Lite, targeting users aged 18 and above. This feature allows users to accumulate points by engaging in various activities on the platform, such as watching videos, liking content, following creators, or inviting friends to join. These points can then be exchanged for rewards like Amazon vouchers, PayPal gift cards, or TikTok coins.

In response to these concerns, the Commission has requested TikTok to provide a risk assessment for TikTok Lite within 24 hours, along with other relevant information by April 26. This includes details on measures implemented by TikTok to address any potential risks associated with the platform.

TikTok has stated that they are already in direct communication with the Commission regarding this matter and have committed to providing the requested information. They also expressed their willingness to cooperate with the Commission's inquiries.

The Commission's actions reflect a growing awareness of the importance of safeguarding users' mental health and well-being in the digital sphere, particularly concerning addictive behaviors that may be exacerbated by platform features like the "Reward Program" on TikTok Lite.
